Power of attorney

A Power of Attorney is a document empowering another person to act on your behalf and sign documents in your place. In Brazil there are two types of Power of Attorney: a public form and a private form. Only Brazilians and foreigners holding a valid Brazilian Identity Card for Foreigners (carteira RNE) can have a public form Power of Attorney drawn at the consular sector of the Embassy. Only persons who are 18 years old or more can grant a Power of Attorney. Click Procuração

If you do not have a Brazilian passport or a Brazilian Identity Card for Foreigners you must ask a Notary Public to draw the Power of Attorney. The document must be legalized at the consular sector of the Embassy. The consular fee for legalization is
SEK 200. Click Legalization and authentication

The document will only be accepted in Brazil if it is translated into Portuguese by an official (sworn) translator in Brazil (if the Notary Public can write the Power of Attorney in English it will be easier to find an official translator in Brazil).

If you do not have a Brazilian passport or a Brazilian Identity Card for Foreigners you can also write yourself a private form Power of Attorney, sign it and authenticate your signature at a Notary Public. The document must then be legalized by the consular sector. The consular feee for the legalization is
SEK 200. Click Legalization and authentication

Documents issued in Latvia must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia .

The Power of Attorney should include the following elements:

1. date (day, month and year) and place (city and country) where it is drawn;

2. full name; date and place of birth; nationality; marital status; identification document (type, number, place where it was issued and authority who issued it); profession and address of residence of both the person who is granting the Power of Attorney and the person who is receiving it. The CPF- Cadastro de Pessoa Física ( Brazilian Individual Taxpayer Registry) number should also be informed;

3. powers conferred;

4. signature of the person who grants the Power of Attorney and of the Notary Public (if it is a public form).

Please note that depending on the subject, only a public form Power of Attorney will be accepted in Brazil (as for example, for buying or selling real estate).
