Entering Brazil with plants and pets

For the admittance into Brazil of plants and pets, the traveler must present to the Embassy´s Consular Section the plant health certificate or the animal health certificate, issued in the area of origin of the plant or animal. In the case of dogs and cats, the traveler must also present the certificate of anti-rabies vaccination (for animals older than 12 weeks):

If you wish to travel to Brazil with your pet (dogs and cats), the Brazilian law requires compliance with the following procedure prior to boarding:

· STEP 1: you must obtain from a licensed (official) veterinarian (a) an animal’s health certificate (certifying that the animal is in good health before boarding and declaring that no contagious disease was verified in the area of origin in the 30 days before boarding) as well as (b) a certificate of rabies vaccine given at least 30 days before the trip (for animals older than 12 weeks); the certificates may be issued by the veterinarian in one single document;

· STEP 2: both your pet’s health certificate and the rabies certificate must be endorsed by a Swedish official veterinary certified by the “Jordbruksverket” 10 days before boarding;

· STEP 3: bring both the endorsed health certificate and the rabies certificate to the Brazilian Embassy (Consular Section) for legalization (refer: http://www.brazilianembassy.se/english/legalauthentic.asp - There's a fee of SEK 200 per document).

Obs: The processing time of a legalization at the Embassy´s Consular Section is 05 (five) working days.

In a document sent to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) informed that several pets, specially dogs and cats, have arrived in Brazil carrying other documents than the International Zoosanitary Certificate (CZI)*. Their owners often give the explanation that they received erroneous instructions in their countries of origin.

Regarding the above explanation, MAPA informs that the persons interested in transporting pets to Brazil must obtain the CZI, according to Administrative Rule 430/1997**, that regulates the sanitary norms for the transit of domestic canines and felines, originating from a third country.

In the specific case of EU countries, besides the obligatory CZI demanded by MAPA, in case the owner wants to return to a EU country with the animal, MAPA recommends the fulfillment of Regulation CE 998/03, which says that the animals should carry a transponder (microchip) according to Norm ISO 11784 or the Annex "A" of Norm 11785. Other models of "transponder" can be used, but it is important to mention that the interested party must carry a microchip reader, because the inspectors only work with chip readers that follow the Norm ISO.

Furthermore, according to the European norm, the animals should be vaccinated against rabies and their owners present the results of the serum tests for the determination of rabies antibodies. Otherwise the animals will not be able to return to their destinations under a period of 4 months, the minimum time required for the collection of blood, realization of analysis and boarding of the animal. One serum test is valid for the whole life of the animal, as long as the the revaccination is not missed.
