A study to be published by IPEA in November shows a decrease in child labour from 13% to 5 % between 1992 and 2008 in Brazil. This figure represents 3 million children between the ages of 5 and 14 who have left the work force. If such progression continues, in 2033 there will be 340.000 children working against the current 1,7 million. The study points out that child labour for children between 5 and 9 years of age should be eradicated in Brazil by 2011.

According to International Labor Organization (ILO) data, this decrease is happening twice as fast as the global average, and faster than that in Latin American countries with similar per capita income as Brazil. These results have surpassed the commitments agreed for the Millenium Development Goals (MDO’s).
