From January 2010, it will be mandatory for all diesel-fueled vehicles in Brazil to use a blend containing 5% of biodiesel .The new measure should decrease Brazil’s diesel imports and it will represent a demand of 2.4 billion litres of biodiesel next year, reinforcing Brazil’s position as one of the main producers of this kind of fuel in the world.

The 5% blend, known as B5, was originally due to be adopted in 2012. The biodiesel percentage in the oil sold to vehicles has increased gradually, and it is estimated that in the next few years, the use of the 20% mixture (B20) will be viable. This move could make Brazil go from fourth to second place as the world's largest biodiesel producer , second only to Germany.
